You may notice a familiar change before your period: conversations feel harder, small frustrations become overwhelming, or sadness and anxiety interrupt days that would otherwise feel manageable.
Then the intensity eases, and you find yourself wondering how to explain what happened. Knowing the pattern may return can become its own source of worry.
At HavenNexus Advanced Psychiatry & TMS in Palm Coast, we offer evaluation and medication management for premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD. We take the timing and impact of your symptoms seriously. Feeling better during another part of the month does not make the difficult days less important.
PMDD involves significant mood symptoms before menstruation, often alongside physical symptoms. Symptoms generally emerge in the week or two before a period and improve within a few days after it begins.

They may include:
PMS can also be disruptive. PMDD involves a recurring pattern of significant mood symptoms and impairment that can interfere substantially with work, relationships, and daily routines.
Evaluation considers the full month, including when symptoms ease. Depression or anxiety that is present more consistently may also worsen before a period, so timing alone does not establish PMDD.
If recurring symptoms are disrupting your life, you can seek help even if you are unsure what to call them.
We begin with what you notice, when it happens, and how it affects your days. We review previous treatment, current medications, menstrual timing, and other health concerns.
You may be seeking an explanation for the first time. Or you may already have a diagnosis and feel that treatment has helped only partly. Tell us what improved, what remained difficult, and whether side effects affected your ability to continue care.
Our care focuses on psychiatric evaluation and medication management. We can also discuss whether other medical concerns deserve attention from your primary care or gynecologic provider.
Your priorities matter. You may want to concentrate more comfortably at work, stay involved in relationships, or spend less of the month anticipating symptoms.
Schedule a PMDD EvaluationSSRIs, a category of antidepressants, are an established medication option that may help reduce PMDD-related mood symptoms. They can be used for PMDD even when depression is not present throughout the month.
Depending on the medication and your needs, a prescriber may recommend daily treatment or treatment during a particular part of the menstrual cycle. Your clinician should determine the schedule with you. Do not change it independently.
We consider your symptom pattern, health history, other medications, previous response, and preferences before discussing a plan.
Possible SSRI side effects include stomach upset, headaches, or sexual side effects. Risks and precautions vary by medication and person. We explain the relevant concerns and review how treatment affects you over time.
Are difficult days becoming less disruptive? Is it easier to concentrate or stay involved in relationships? Are side effects creating new problems? Those details matter alongside changes in mood.

Bring your current medication list, previous treatment information, and any symptom or menstrual-cycle records you already have.
A daily record can help show when symptoms begin, how intense they become, and when they ease. Recording mood, sleep, physical symptoms, and effects on everyday activities across at least two cycles can support evaluation. Include better days and days with few or no symptoms, too.
You do not need to complete that record before asking for help. We can begin with what you have noticed and discuss what additional information would be useful.
During evaluation, we talk through your concerns and possible next steps. Follow-up allows us to review the pattern across cycles, discuss side effects, and consider difficulties that remain.

Tell us about the full month, including days when symptoms are less intense. We consider whether another condition is present and whether it worsens before menstruation.
